Darwinian Medicine What Evolutionary Medicine Offers to Endothelium Researchers
نویسنده
چکیده
Almost all our detailed knowledge about the endothelium is proximate knowledge about its structure, development, and functioning, and how its dysfunctions lead to disease. The other, evolutionary half of endothelial biology has been neglected. Some researchers are unfamiliar with the fundamental distinction between proximate and evolutionary questions, and methods for formulating and testing evolutionary hypotheses about the endothelium remain underappreciated. This chapter offers a brief overview ofthe distinction between evolutionary and proximate explanations, followed by an introduction to evolutionary medicine and its applications to the endothelium. Evolutionary, or Darwinian, medicine simply brings the power of evolutionary biology to bear on the problems of medicine. Some areas, such as pathogen evolution and population genetics, are well developed. Another aspect, emphasized in Darwinian medicine, is the enterprise of formulating and testing hypotheses about why natural selection has not shaped bodies that are more resistant to disease. The six key reasons for traits that leave bodies vulnerable to disease are reviewed below. Each is illustrated with examples from general medicine, and then with examples from a major disease of the endothelium, atherosclerosis.

Empirical evolutionary medicine
Medicine and evolutionary biology have crossed path several times since the publication of On the Origins of Species but the “new science of Darwinian medicine” dates back only to the early 1990s (Nesse & Williams, 1994). For psychiatrist Randolph Nesse and evolutionary biologist George C. Williams, the founders of Darwinian medicine, “there is no branch of medicine that cannot benefit substant...

Twenty years have passed since the foundational article of what is now known as evolutionary medicine (EM) was published. This young medical discipline examines, following Darwinian principles, susceptibility to certain diseases and how we react to them. In short, EM analyzes the final cause of the disease from a historical perspective. Over the years, EM has been introduced in various medical ...

s ince the late 1970s psychiatry has accumulated an enormous base of knowledge and remarkably effective new treatments. Despite this new knowledge, however, fundamental disagreements persist about the very nature of psychopathology. While the need for a “bio-psycho-social model” of mental disorders is widely acknowledged, psychiatry remains split into factions, some that emphasize genetic/physi...

In this article, I argue that distinguishing 'evolutionary' from 'Darwinian' medicine will help us assess the variety of roles that evolutionary explanations can play in a number of medical contexts. Because the boundaries of evolutionary and Darwinian medicine overlap to some extent, however, they are best described as distinct 'research traditions' rather than as competing paradigms. But whil...
متن کاملThe great opportunity: Evolutionary applications to medicine and public health
Evolutionary biology is an essential basic science for medicine, but few doctors and medical researchers are familiar with its most relevant principles. Most medical schools have geneticists who understand evolution, but few have even one evolutionary biologist to suggest other possible applications. The canyon between evolutionary biology and medicine is wide. The question is whether they offe...
